Ranma 1/2 Fan Fiction Wiki

Song-fic are stories within which a song is either the basis of the story (i.e. the song dictates the plot), the story is a song with lyrics altered to match the fandom, the story features a song at beginning or end that is chosen to match the mood/theme of the story, or where the lyrics of a song are spread throughout the story at intervals.

Definition[]

1. Lengthy lyrics may be quoted at the beginning or end of a story, usually to indicate how the song has influenced the author to write the story, to make some kind of statement on the story, or to set the mood for what is to come.

2. Lyrics may be directly incorporated into passes of the story, usually a chorus or verse at a time, to make comment on the action happening. In effect, this makes the story read like a written "music video".

3. One (or more) of the characters may be listening to a song being played, and the lyrics cause the character reflect on his or her own thoughts and feelings.

Notes[]

  • Song-fic is not a well looked upon genre due to the perception that using lyrics to substitute for the writer's own words is the mark of a poor writer.[1]
  • Many fan fiction archives ban Song-fics due to concerns over copyright.[1] For example, Fanfiction.net banned such works in 2005.[2]
  • Bans such as noted above, along with better streaming internet and video editing tools which allowed for the creation of actual music videos, lead to a decline in the popularity of Song-fics.
